What is a Cohabitation Investigation?
A cohabitation investigation is an investigation to find out if a person receiving court ordered alimony payments has begun cohabiting with a new partner, thus terminating any requirement for the investigating party to make future payments.
In 2014, New Jersey addressed the cohabitation situation with an alimony reform bill that was passed into law. The revised alimony statute can be found under N.J.S.A. 2A:34-23. This statute breaks down the proof you will need to provide to the court in order to be granted an end to your alimony payments.
